Mae Chaem Teen Jok Festival 2025

By David

Mae Chaem is a small, ethnically diverse town nestled in a valley below Thailand’s highest mountain. Its history dates back to the 14th century.

It’s inhabitants include Lua, Hmong, Karen, and Tai Yuan peoples.

The Tai Yuan are renowned for a particular type of weaving, specific to Mae Chaem.

Called Teen Chok, the weave features mainly red and yellow colours woven into decorative bands at the bottom of sarongs, called Pha Sin.

Traditionally, in Mae Chaem, the Pha Teen Jok is thickened to make every piece of cloth double-sided automatically. This unique weaving feature means the cloth commands premium prices. Typically, only black or white thread is used to sew the cloth’s edge.

To showcase this unique weaving, Mae Chaem has an annual Teen Jok festival, which includes a parade of its ethnic people in full costume, plus a fairground with local foods, handicrafts, and live music.

In 2025, the 30th annual Teen Jok Festival will take place from 13–17 February 2025.
