New Didote waterfall elephant camp opens to public
Sagaing – The Myanmar Timber Enterprise has launched a soft opening of the Didote waterfall elephant camp located inside Didote reserve forest.
The 74-acre camp, which has been under construction since November, will officially open on January 20.
Construction of the camp, which will house six elephants, has been designed to minimise environmental damage, said Assistant General Manager Nanda Soe of the Pyin Oo Lwin district timber production enterprise.
The camp will draw on the natural sites of the local reserve.
“We want to introduce the waterfalls located in the reserve to travellers,” said Nanda Soe. “There are three waterfalls in the reserve.”
The site had previously operated as the Warphyutaung elephant camp.
The facility is reaching out to foreign travel agencies, and the elephants have been trained to appeal to both local and foreign travellers. The entry fees for foreign visitors will be 20,000 kyat and 1,000 kyat for local visitors. Elephant rides will cost 20,000 kyat for foreigners and 5,000 kyat for locals, according to the enterprise.
Myanmar now has more than 15 elephant camps, according to the enterprise.
