Thailand – 2017 – International Drum Festival and Wai Kru Ceremony
The International Drum Festival and Wai Kru Ceremony 2017 is scheduled to take place from 26 to 30 July, 2017, at Thailand’s only drum-making village in Ekkarat sub-district of Ang Thong in Thailand’s Central Region.
Visitors will get the chance to see performing arts and talented drummers, some of whom travel from overseas to show off their skills. The event also gives visitors the chance to witness the traditional ‘Wai Kru’ ceremony which is held for drum makers and drummers to gather and pay respect to their drum masters. This ceremony shows the high esteem that talented craftsmen and musicians are held within Thailand.
Other fascinating traditional rituals and performances to be enjoyed at the festival include the ‘Krob Kru’ ceremony which is made up of traditional Thai drum performances and a fun but noisy grand drum procession which is enjoyed by the whole town.
And there’s a lot more to enjoy including a long-drum competition from 10 districts in Ang Thong province, a light and sound presentation, a Luk Thung Thai folk song singing contest, food fair and many cultural performances which highlight the local culture and traditions.
There are also exhibitions on Ang Thong province and the drum-making village and information about how Thai and international drums are made. There are even sales of local products for people who may want a drum of their own to take home.
Ang Thong province is 20 km. from Ayutthaya. Visitors who wish to join the event are advised to book accommodation in advance as the event can be very popular.
