Luang Prabang Will Celebrate Its 20th Anniversary As A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Laos is preparing to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Luang Prabang World Heritage Town which will fall on 5-9 December 2015 in Luang Prabang Province. “In preparation for the celebration, we have appointed an organizing committee and allocated specific jobs to relevant sectors to mobilize local people in the municipality of Luang Prabang to get involved,” said Vice Governor of Luang Prabang Province, Mr Saysamone Khomthavong.
This year’s celebration will feature a variety of activities such as an international conference on the protection, conservation and development of the Heritage town of Luang Prabang, photo exhibitions, a drawing competition for children, a product exhibition fair, a food fair, an art performance and a sports competition. In addition, there will be a special procession of large elephants that will walk through the town of Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang reached a new record in 2014, receiving 379,000 international visitors, up by 10.6% over 2013. Back to 2009, the former royal capital recorded only 238,000 foreign visitors. This represents an increase of 59% in total international arrivals in just five years.
